How to set up

To set up and configure your NETGEAR extender, follow these steps:
  1. Plug in the extender and ensure that the Power LED is lit. Press the Power or On/Off button if the LED is not on.
  2. Connect your computer or mobile device to the extender’s WiFi network. The default WiFi network name (SSID) is usually NETGEAR_EXT, which might be “password” or left blank.
  3. Open a web browser and enter either or in the address bar.
  4. The New Extender Setup page will appear. Click or tap on “NEW EXTENDER SETUP.”
  5. If prompted, agree to the terms and conditions by clicking or tapping “YES” or “I AGREE.”
  6. Choose your extender’s admin credentials, which will be used to access the extender’s settings on a web browser. It’s recommended to keep the default username as “admin” and set a unique password different from your WiFi network password.
  7. Select and answer two security questions from the drop-down menus. If you forget, these questions will be used to recover your extender’s admin credentials.
  8. Click or tap “NEXT.”
  9. If your extender offers to use the NETGEAR Genie to assist, click or tap “YES” or “CONTINUE.”
  10. The extender will search for local WiFi networks. Select the radio buttons for your network’s 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi Network Names (SSIDs). If you don’t see your networks, click “See More.”
  11. Click or tap “NEXT.”
  12. Enter your existing network’s password and click or tap “NEXT.”
  13. Select SSIDs and passwords for your extender. By default, the extender uses the name of your existing network with “_2GEXT” added for the 2.4GHz band and “_5GEXT” for the 5GHz band. The passwords are usually the same as your existing network.
  14. For mesh extenders, you may have the option to use the same WiFi name and password as your existing network. Select the “Enable One WiFi Name” check box if your extender supports this feature.
  15. Click or tap “NEXT.”
  16. The extender will apply your settings, which may take a few minutes.
  17. The extender will display each band’s WiFi network names (SSIDs) and passwords.
  18. On a device, you want to connect to the extender network, go to WiFi settings and connect to the extender’s new network.
  19. Go back to your web browser, select the checkbox at the bottom of the page, and click or tap “CONTINUE.”
  20. Your NETGEAR extender is now set up and extending your network’s coverage.
